Photograph Examples - November, 2004 - from SCScompA

This month we show:

  1. Examples of Scanning - Holiday Related Materials

  2. This month's Great Golf Hole.

Here is a collage of some pictures from this month's example.

The images shown in this Web page are in the "computer" as a result of being obtained from a digital camera or from scanning a photograph or other item. The following shown images default to digital camera origin and, if not, the shown picture will be identified as a scanned image. If digital camera, the photograph has normally been taken at an Olympus Camera "SHQ" setting of 4.9 megapixels (2560x1920), with some pictures having been taken at less pixel detail ("HQ" or "SQ") 1.3 or 0.3 megapixels 1280x960 or 640x480). In most cases, even if the digital picture was taken at these-mentioned sizes, the picture has been resized for showing on computer screens. I try to keep most images to have a maximum height of 600 pixels for computer-display. I use Paint Shop Pro (from JASC) as my primary application for modifying/resizing/coming photographic images into one image (photo).

Scanned photographs are scanned at 300 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), 150 or 100 PPI, and the chosen PPI will be identified, if deemed important to do so, in the comments for that particular image.

The following is aimed at showing examples of using a computer system, digital cameras, and perhaps scanners, as part of home computing environment. Hopefully, the shown pictures will give you some ideas for use of your home computer system.

Contact SCScompA if you have any comments/questions regarding anything that is shown in this Web page.

Examples of Scanning - Holiday Related Materials

Stamps

Each season of the year, we purchase or are sent some nice season-related postal stamps.

I sometimes scan and save the scanned output for use sometime as extra embellishment to other matters such as a Word document or, even, as a short-time use in background on the PC display.

This month's example I might use are shown below: (Note: I used PaintShop Pro to remove the information regarding stamp cost/etc.)

Two of the following stamps are clickable if you want to see them (and possibly save them on your PC) in larger size. (The larger-sized stamps were scanned at 600 DPI. The smaller were scanned at 150 DPI).

Another type of stamp are celebratory / informative. Take a look at this example (click on any of the figures to see a description of the piece as provided by the US Postal Service on the back of the stamp package).

I hope the above examples give you encouragement to scan/use (for your own purposes!) stamps or similar items that come your way.

Greeting Cards

If you get a greeting card that you like the image of -- why not scan it for your own possibly-in-the-future use? Here is the first holiday card we received this year -- and, I like it!

I scanned it at 300 DPI.

I may have time to include other examples in this file later on this month -- but, if I don't: Have a Happy End of 2004!

A Great Golf Hole

The 2005 British Open is in St. Andrews, at the Old Course. Adjacent to many olds of the Old is the New Course (opened in late 1800s).

If you have not played the New yet and you are in St. Andrews, give it a try.

(Click on either of the pictures to see them in larger size.)

We love the New and look forward to playing it each April -- and enjoying the yellow bushes!

I wish you well in your picture taking and travels or other activities -- and hope you share that with a journal and Web-type of presentation you share with family/friends.
