Photograph Examples - May, 2002 - from SCScompA

We recently returned from a trip to one of our favorite places in the world: Scotland. The "collage", below, show some of the photos that we took that are included in this month's examples.

The photos were taken using the 1.2 megapixel setting on our Olympus digital camera. The pictures were moved first to our laptop while we were on vacation and, in some cases, modified as necessary using PaintShop Pro (from JASC) while on the laptop. Primary reasons for modifying the digital image while on the laptop were:

Once the selected pictures were determined to be viewable on a PC/display, I built a small/simple HTM-tag file for showing the selected images and moved the HTM-tag file and the selected pictures to the Web using America Online's free-to-the-AOL-user FTP (Web) space as part of its "Hometown" support.

Once there, friends/family I alerted using eMail that I had updated this year's vacation Web space were able to follow-along with us as our vacation went along.

In addition to the pictures, I moved a Word-document journal of as-time-allowed during the vacation. The journal, together with the pictures, was an effective way to keep our friends/family aware of our vacation activities.

Once back home, I removed the pictures and journal from the AOL Web space since we were now in direct contact with friends/family. All of the vacation's pictures/journal were moved to my home PC from the laptop.

While on the home PC I will continue to expand upon the vacation's HTM-tag file and the many-more pictures than were shown on the AOL Web space as part of a vacation PC "album" of this year's trip.

Good luck with any similar vacation/journal activities you may have in the upcoming months.

Here is a collage of some pictures from this month's example.

The photographs shown in this example are in the PC as a result of being obtained from a digital camera or from scanning a photograph. The following pictures default to digital camera origin and, if not, the shown picture will be identified as a scanned image. If digital camera, the photograph has been taken at a max of 1.3 megapixels (1280 x 960), with many of the digital pictures having been taken at a less pixel size (640 x 480). In many cases, even if the digital picture was taken at these-mentioned sizes, the picture has been resized for showing on PC screens. I try to keep most images to have a maximum height of 550 pixels for PC-display. I use Paint Shop Pro (from JASC) as my primary application for modifying/resizing/coming photographic images into one image (photo).

Scanned photographs are scanned at 300 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), 150 or 100 PPI, and the chosen PPI will be identified in the comments for that particular image.

The following is aimed at showing examples of using the PC, digital cameras, and perhaps scanners, as part of home PC environment. Hopefully, the shown pictures will give you some ideas for your home use of PCs.

Contact SCScompA if you have any comments/questions regarding anything that is shown in this Web page.

All images, below, were taken at 1280 x 960 pixel detail and resized to the shown-below size.

Note: Most pictures shown this month have been taken using a digital camera with a setting of 1.2 megapixels with the picture from the camera being 1280 pixels wide. I resized the pictures to be 1000 pixels wide. If you are viewing this Web page on a display that is not 1000 pixels wide you will not see the 1000 pixel-wide pictures at one time. Normally, I have been displaying photos at a maximum width of 800 pixels. Let me know your comments regarding my making this change -- if you have a comment!

Following, are some selected pictures taken from a vacation/golf trip to Scotland during April, 2002.

The purpose of the following is to give an example of using a digital camera, laptop, and home computer to modify/show/enjoy vacation-taken pictures.

This is the main shopping street of North Berwick.

It was early in the morning -- that is why not a lot of action on the street!

A Great Golf Hole

(Repeat comments from earlier in this Web page in case you missed the comments regarding this change): As I mentioned earlier in this Web page, the pictures shown this month have been taken using a digital camera with a setting of 1.2 megapixels. The picture from the camera was 1280 pixels wide. I resized the following pictures to be 1000 pixels wide. If you are viewing this on a display that is not 1000 pixels wide you will not see the entire picture at one time. Normally, I have been displaying photos at a maximum width of 800 pixels. Let me know your comments regarding my making this change -- if you have a comment!

Thanks, in advance.

The course, this month, is Gullane (Scotland). The course is 30 miles or so from Edinburgh -- the hills of Edinburgh are across the bay shown in this picture.

The views, while you are playing golf at Gullane, are expansive and very special if you enjoy links-style golf.

The download size of this picture is: 98 KB

------

The place where the picture (above) was taken was from Gullane's Golf Course #1, the 7th tee. There are three golf courses at Gullane: #1, #2, and #3. From the 7th tee, if you turn around and look over your shoulder, the course you see in the background is Muirfield (where the British Open will be held in July, 2002).

The bench you see, just off the tee at Gullane #1's 7th tee, is a terrific place to relax!

The download size of this picture is: 74 KB

.........

Let me know if you have played -- or expect to play in the future -- the above golf holes.

I wish you well in your picture taking and travels or other activities -- and hope you share that with a journal and Web-type of presentation you share with family/friends.
